Spokesman-Review cuts two editions, will print just once a day

The Spokesman-Review is cutting back to a single edition, from three it previously had to serve its readers in Washington State. The newspaper recently announced newsroom layoffs. Editor Steve Smith writes in his blog:

This is the second shoe to drop in the strategic plan that relates to the staffing decisions we made last week. As I've said, the decisions I made are arguable. This strategic move is arguable. But it represents our best shot at continuing to produce a high-quality daily newspaper that well serves the largest number of our readers. My hope is we'll actually be able to beef up our coverage of some important news topics and continue to build our local news franchise in Spokane County and western Kootenai County.
