Alabama's major newspapers take 2010 circulation hit

Alabama daily newspapers continue to experience circulation declines and many trimmed their staffs in recent months in the wake of falling advertising revenue.

The state’s four largest papers each reported average daily circulation drops of at least 7.7 percent for the six months ended March 31, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The Birmingham News posted the largest year-over-year circulation decline of 14 percent among Alabama’s largest dailies, while the Montgomery Advertiser’s circulation slid 9.2 percent.
