Torstar profit makes online subscriptions 'unnecessary'

Several of the world's major newspapers have begun the risky move charging for online content, but Canada's biggest, the Toronto Star, has no such ambitions -- at least for now.

The parent company, Torstar Corp., on Wednesday reported better-than-expected financial results for the fourth quarter. Despite a "cautious" outlook for the current year, management hinted that advertising revenues were stabilizing in its newspaper businesses, making a venture into so-called online "pay walls" unnecessary.
