Morning Line: Why are newspapers so big?

The Guardian didn’t get delivered this morning so I thought I would buy The Times on the way to the station.

Man, was it a hefty purchase. Not the price – at less than half a price of a greetings card or a Starbucks skinny latte, £1 is a bargain for such a well-crafted tome; tens of thousands of words commissioned, written, edited and laid out with great pictures and graphics. As an ex-newspaper man I can only stand on the sidelines and admire.

No, it was the size of the thing that bowled me over. The main section was 100 pages.
