Updated newspaper documentary gets its public television premiere

It's a tricky business, recording history as it is happening. Just ask Manny Mendoza, a former News entertainment critic and one of the filmmakers behind the documentary Stop the Presses: The American Newspaper in Peril. He and his co-creator, Dallas-based documentarian Mark Birnbaum, finished the film in early 2008, just before its premiere at the AFI Dallas International Film Festival in April.

"So much has happened since then," Mendoza says. "We had a statistic about how there had been 4,000 jobs lost through layoffs and buyouts in the newspaper industry since 2001. There have been an additional 10,000 since then."
