At Newhouse Newspapers, a Change in a No-Layoffs Policy

It is hard to imagine a policy less in tune with these times of fast-shrinking newspapers: for decades, Advance Publications, owned by the Newhouse family, has pledged that its daily papers will not lay anyone off.

But on Wednesday, Advance papers told their staffs that the promise is coming to an end. Even then, there was an element of the chain’s old paternalism; it gave employees six months’ warning before the policy will change.
