Newspapers: still needed

THESE days it is fashionable in some circles to say that newspapers are dying, going out of business, the horse and buggy of news media.

But there are many signs that this analysis is totally wrong, even in places like the economically depressed Detroit area.

When Gannett, the nation's biggest newspaper company, announced plans to close the Birmingham Eccentric, the town's newspaper since 1878, citizens met, protested, demonstrated - until the owners changed their mind. When the Citizen, Hamtramck's 74-year-old paper, called it quits in April, a new paper was up and running by May.
