So Long To The City Newspaper

With the Los AngelesTimes' parent company, Tribune, bankrupt, and The New York Times Co. ( NYT - news - people ) in such dire financial straits that it is threatening to shut the Boston Globe, which it bought in 1993, will the local and regional identities that once were reinforced by the local newspapers be the next thing to go? With Denver's Rocky Mountain News closed, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer now a Web-only publication, Hearst threatening to close the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times also bankrupt, some say that local dailies may be a thing of the past.
