How the iPhone could save the newspaper industry

Newspaper and magazine publishers of the world, I have one word for you: subscriptions. That's the key term (for you, anyway) from yesterday's unveiling of the new iPhone software and developer's kit, and it could be your lifeline as the newsprint industry teeters on the verge of collapse.

OK, so here's the deal. Apple announced yesterday that for the first time, application developers will be allow to sell additional content within their own apps; for example, gamers could buy additional levels of a game, travelers could buy guides for different cities, or—pay attention here—readers could buy a subscription to a publication, like yours.
