Globe buyout deadline passes, cuts unclear

The Boston Globe’s deadline for employees to apply for a contract buyout was last Friday, but employees still have seven additional days to change their minds, a spokesman for the newspaper said late Monday.

In January, the Globe said it was looking to trim 50 newsroom jobs due to the recession and the newspaper industry’s deep-rooted problems.

The paper has 433 newsroom positions in total.

If enough people do not opt for buyout packages, the Globe will be forced lay off staff, a move that could come as soon as this week, according to sources.
