The Commercial Appeal cuts 48

The ongoing economic slump has forced The Commercial Appeal to reduce its staff by 48.

The cuts include 20 journalists from the newsroom, a 15 percent reduction, including editorial cartoonist Bill Day.

Printing and production divisions, classified advertising and the circulation department also will reduce staff in this round of cost-cutting. All the staff reductions will be completed by the end of March.

After this round of job cuts, newsroom staffing stands at 118. Overall, The Commercial Appeal staffing now stands at about 540.
