Student newspapers prevail in economic turndown

The financial outlook for most student publications is fundamentally sound, said more than a dozen student editors, publishers and advertising managers of colleges and universities across the country. Most student newspapers have managed to avoid the large-scale cutbacks often found among their mainstream counterparts.

“We’re not experiencing a problem,” said Kevin Schwartz, general manager at The Daily Tar Heel, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “There’s no advertising downturn for us.”
