Sacramento Bee To Shed More Jobs

Another major round of buyouts or layoffs is about to hit the Sacramento Bee, sources tell CBS13 News.

The source says the newspaper is preparing to cut its editorial staff by about 40 in the next few days. The paper has offered voluntary buyouts to members of the Newspaper Guild. If there are not enough volunteers taking the buyouts, the newspaper has told the Guild that layoffs will be next.

The layoffs will not be limited to the newsroom. Insiders say as many as 80 employees could be cut in the upcoming weeks.

The Bee eliminated 86 jobs last June as part of a 10 percent cut affecting all papers owned by The McClatchy Co., which is based in Sacramento.

In September, the paper gave buyouts to 87 employees, including 23 in its newsroom.
