NPG Co. directs newspaper division employees to take week off without pay

Citing the recession, St. Joseph-based NPG Co. has directed employees in its newspaper division, including those working for Sun Publications, to take a week off without pay.

The St. Joseph News-Press, the company’s flagship newspaper, reported Tuesday that NPG also said employees’ wages would be frozen at current levels until the economy improves.

The newspaper said that all 390 employees in NPG’s newspaper division have been told to take one-week furloughs by mid-July. It said that the newspaper division had 60 fewer employees this year than last year, with many open positions left unfilled.
