Layoffs a possibility at The Buffalo News

The Buffalo News has extended by one week a buyout offer to its largest union and has warned the Buffalo Newspaper Guild CWA-Local 31026 that layoffs may be in offing.

The News extended its buyout package to the nearly 300 Guild members by moving the deadline to March 6 from Feb. 28. Those who accept the offer will receive a minimum $60,000, one-time payment — before taxes. Benefits, such as health-care coverage, are not part of the buyout offer.

Only a handful of Guild members, however, are believed to be considering accepting the offer, sources said. Because of the low number of employees willing to take the package, the News notified Guild members by letter that it may be forced to consider layoffs at the region’s largest daily newspaper.
