Layoffs hit nine more News-Journal staffers

The News-Journal Corp. laid off nine employees in its news department today as part of a continuing effort to cut costs while negotiations continue with an unnamed prospective buyer.

The layoffs included longtime employees in the news, online, art and Accent departments. This marked the second round of layoffs in the news department since News-Journal Corp. signed a joint sales agreement with minority shareholder Cox Enterprises last spring and began preparing the company for sale in a depressed economy that has hit newspapers especially hard.

The News-Journal has cut 186 employees from various departments and taken other cost-cutting measures, including closing three bureaus in the past eight months. Its total workforce at newspaper and Pennysaver operations stands at 555 employees.
