Herald and Times group suffers big circulation falls

Beleaguered Scottish newspaper company Herald & Times Group saw its leading titles the Herald and the Sunday Herald post big year-on-year circulation declines in January.

Newsquest's Glasgow-based subsidiary saw circulation of its daily Herald paper fall 9.70% year-on-year to 60,976, but posted a slight month-on-month increase 0.61% against the traditionally quiet month of December, according to figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations published today.

The Sunday Herald saw a 12.25% year-on-year decline to record an average circulation of 45,406 each week in January. Month-on-month it was up 7.17%.

The falls come in a month when Herald & Times Group staff were told that the voluntary redundancy process, in which many of them were involved, was stalled following collapse of talks between the union and the publisher.
