Globe lays off 30 after 60 exit early

Some 30 unionized workers were laid off yesterday from The Globe and Mail in an effort to cut costs as advertising revenue declines.

The layoffs come less than a month after publisher and CEO Phillip Crawley said the company hoped to cut about 80 positions through a buyout package and, if that wasn't enough, through layoffs.

Some 60 people – half of those in the paper's editorial department – took a voluntary severance package from the company last week.
