Free Press to move production operations to consolidated plant

The Free Press plans to move its printing and packaging operations to a consolidated facility in Jacksonville that will serve all the publications of Freedom ENC, the media group within which the newspaper operates.

Freedom ENC is investing about $2 million in a newer, larger press capable of printing the group's three dailies - The Free Press, the New Bern Sun Journal and the Jacksonville Daily News - as well as its three weeklies, its shoppers and all ancillary publications. Work in preparation for installing the press is already under way at the Daily News....

Shutting down that production operation will result in the loss of eight full-time jobs and 11 part-time jobs. Some of those workers will transfer to Jacksonville. The others are eligible for severance packages.
