Democrat-Gazette paper lays off 50-60 statewide as revenue drops

The floundering economy has forced the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to reduce its work force in various departments by approximately 3 percent to 5 percent during the past two months, including five employees in the Little Rock newsroom and two in the Northwest Arkansas bureau newsroom on Monday.

Paul Smith, president of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Inc. - which publishes the state's largest newspaper as well as the Benton County Daily Record and the Northwest Arkansas Times - said of the approximately 1,300 employees statewide, 30 to 40 have been eliminated in Little Rock and roughly 20 in the Northwest bureau.

"I don't have any doubt that we'll get through this," Smith said. "The question is when."
