Las Vegas Optic to end run as a daily — a dozen carriers ‘likely’ to lose their contracts

The Las Vegas Optic will no longer be a daily newspaper come March 2, according to the publisher. The paper, which currently runs every weekday, will go to a three-day-a-week format, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The paper will also cease home delivery and will be delivered by mail.

The reason given, not surprisingly, is the troubled economy. But another reason may be the troubled state of newspapers big and small around the nation.

“Economic circumstances necessitate the change. We’ve got to cut expenses,” Editor and Publisher Tom McDonald said.
The paper, so far, will not be cutting any positions, but did cut the equivalent of four full-time positions last year by attrition. It now has 21 full-time and part-time employees. The employees serve a circulation of 4,359.

The paper will adjust subscription rates to the new publishing schedule, but Optic readers will have to get used to receiving their newspapers in the mail.
