Google cuts print-ads service to trim costs

Google Inc. said Tuesday it's discontinuing its print-advertisements program, a fledgling service that didn't mesh with the Internet company's new focus on austerity amid the economic downturn.

Google director of Google Print Ads Spencer Spinnell wrote in a posting on a company Web site that the program, launched in November 2006, "has not created the impact that we -- or our partners -- wanted. As a result, we will stop offering Print Ads on February 28."

Spinnell noted that advertisers with campaigns already booked will have their ads placed through March 31. Google said the program included 800 U.S. newspapers.
