Battle escalates between Post, News

The Denver newspaper war escalated Wednesday with claims and counterclaims about The Denver Post's handling of payments for newsroom expenses.

Post owner MediaNews Group issued a statement Wednesday denying allegations by Rocky Mountain News owner E.W. Scripps that The Post had violated terms of a joint operating agreement between the two newspapers.

The News, in a Wednesday article, cited a purported letter from Scripps to MediaNews Group claiming that Media News had improperly borrowed money from the Denver Newspaper Agency to fund newsroom costs. The agency manages the business operations of both newspapers.

Neither Scripps, MediaNews nor the DNA have confirmed the letter's authenticity, although the News posted a copy of the letter on its website.
