Wilmington newspaper laying off 31 workers

The News Journal Co. is laying off 31 employees.

The newspaper announced Tuesday in an article on its Web site that 44 jobs, including 13 vacant positions, are being eliminated as part of a companywide effort by McLean, Va.-based Gannett Co. to reduce payroll by 10 percent. Another three Wilmington employees volunteered to leave.

News Journal Marketing Director J.B. Braun says the paper is determined to continue to serve readers as the best source of news and entertainment. Braun says the paper has a daily circulation of 102,171 and 120,079 on Sundays, citing the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Braun says there were about 436 full-time employees before the cuts. He says layoffs came from every division except the online division.
