Reno Gazette-Journal announces 61 layoffs

The Reno Gazette-Journal plans to cut 61 positions over the next four weeks, halt a pair of weekly publications and close a commercial printing facility in Carson City, the newspaper's president and publisher said Wednesday.

The changes are part of a work force reduction announced on Oct. 29 by Gannett Co., the newspaper's parent company, in response to the nation's economic downtown, Ted Power said in an article on the Gazette-Journal's Web site Wednesday afternoon.

The final editions of the two weeklies—the Douglas (County) Times and Fallon Star Press—will be Dec. 26.

Power did not specify a closing date for the Carson City-based Eastern Sierra Publishing nor describe how many of the layoffs would occur in the Gazette-Journal's newsroom.
