Layoffs under way at The News Journal

The News Journal and delawareonline.com began notifying 31 employees this week that their jobs would be eliminated in a companywide effort by the Gannett Co. to reduce payroll by 10 percent.

In Delaware, a total of 44 jobs are being cut. Thirteen of the eliminated positions were open. Another three employees volunteered to leave.

“The economic conditions we face are the same faced by many companies in Delaware. We are neighbors and business partners,” said News Journal Marketing Director J.B. Braun. “Despite these reductions, our determination to provide the best source of news and entertainment to our readers is unchanged. We know and thoroughly appreciate our position in the community where we live and work.”

Payroll reductions were initiated this week across Gannett Co., the nation’s largest newspaper publisher, with a goal of cutting 10 percent by the first quarter of 2009.
