Gannett eliminates 40 positions at Central New York newspapers

Gannett Co. Inc.'s three Central New York newspapers have eliminated 40 positions this week at their operations in Vestal, Johnson City, Elmira and Ithaca.

Gannett owns and operates the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Vestal and Johnson City, the Star-Gazette in Elmira and The Ithaca Journal in Ithaca.

The latest reductions are part of the company's 10 percent work force cut announced in October in response to declining revenue. The action follows a separate cut announced in August.

"Despite promising gains from new local advertising programs, many of our advertisers are being impacted by what is now officially a recession," said Sherman Bodner, president and publisher of the three newspapers. "Once again we have to look at reducing expenses."
