Youth mentoring org seeks funds to stay in business

After a three-decades long run, a local youth mentoring program may be forced to end.

Youth Communication Chicago provides free journalism programs to 400 inner-city youth. But after 32 years, it is preparing to close its doors next month if its fundraising efforts fall short.

“If I had to put a price tag on it, I would say we need to raise $150,000 by year-end to remain operational,” said Phil Costello, executive director of Youth Communication.

“Surely, the economy has affected us because donors are giving less this year, and there’s only so much money to go around.”
He said that students were crushed when he told them.
