World-Herald eliminates 51 jobs

The World-Herald reduced its work force Wednesday by 51 employees, or about 7 percent of its employment base.

Terry Kroeger, president and publisher of the newspaper, said the action was taken in response to the economic challenges that many businesses face this year, including higher transportation costs. The World-Herald also has endured a nearly 50 percent increase in the cost of newsprint paper compared with a year ago.

"This difficult choice is a careful action to protect our ongoing commitment to readers and advertisers," Kroeger said. "We will continue to provide a complete report of news and events happening in the Midlands, or that have an effect on the Midlands, or stuff that's just plain interesting."
