Virginian-Pilot To Begin Layoffs By End Of Year

The Virginian-Pilot is cutting at least 125 positions, about 10 percent of its work force, mostly through layoffs and ending affiliated publications.

Publisher Maurice Jones says lowered advertising sales during the economic downturn is prompting the newspaper to run its business section on Sundays only; shut down Link, a free daily newspaper; close or sell three out-of-state military-base newspapers; and trim the paper's size by at least 40 pages a week.

The newsroom will lose 15 employees and drop two open positions, according to editor Denis Finley. The cuts are expected by the end of the year.

Landmark Media Enterprises LLC is continuing to negotiate the sale of the newspaper. Jones says the potential deal didn't influence the cost-cutting measures.
