Rutgers Senate OKs fee changes, but student newspaper's future uncertain

In a contentious meeting in which many were not given the opportunity to speak, the Rutgers University Senate voted in favor of recommending a fee change that would allow students to easily waive a once-a-semester fee funding the student newspaper.

But in a possible indication of the measure's future, Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick voted against it — and the ultimate decision on the recommendation rests with the administration.

About 20 percent of the Daily Targum's $1.2 million operating budget comes from an $9.75 fee that students pay with their tuition each semester.
