People titles close just nine months after its launch

The Waterford People and Dungarvan People titles, launched in February by Independent News and Media (INM), are to cease publication.

It is understood that the tabloids published on Monday night will be the final such issues to hit Waterford news stands.

The news follows hot on the heels of the paper’s letting go three of its staff in late October, including its editor, a journalist and an advertising representative.

The People, which operated offices in Cleaboy and Dungarvan during its brief existence, had sought to add to INM’s circulation figures in the highly competitive Waterford media sector.

But the unforeseen economic downturn and ensuing restricted advertising budgets which has affected all regional titles, could not have come at a worse time for a new product attempting to establish itself in the market.
