Associated Press Staff To Shrink 10% By 2010

The Associated Press told employees that by some point in 2009, the news cooperative's staff would be 10% less than current levels, according to an internal source.

The news cooperative's chief executive, Tom Curley, made the prediction at a meeting held with staffers on Thursday. With more than 4,000 employees, a 10% reduction at the Associated Press would amount to roughly 400 positions.

The venerable news service began a hiring freeze several weeks ago as the global financial crisis and economic downturn took a particularly heavy toll on its chief source of clients: the newspaper industry.
