The Canadian Press is reporting that The Montreal Gazette is yet another daily looking to reduce its workforce in the newsroom. Publisher Alan Allnutt released a memo to staffers hoping to convince an undetermined number of them to accept buyouts. He had a meeting with unknown members of the Montreal Newspaper Guild yesterday.
He says in the memo that the move is being driven by the newspaper's market, circulation and readership as well as by other economic factors.
The newspaper is one of several Canadian daily newspapers owned by Canwest Global Communications Corp (TSX:CGS).
It wasn't known how many employees would be affected. The union contract with the Gazette expires June 1, 2008.
